From Image to Engraving: How to Prepare Your Artwork for the Laser

So, you’ve got a brilliant idea and a shiny CO2 laser machine ready to bring it to life. You fire up the software, hit “start,” and… the result is nothing like you imagined. The lines are blurry, the engraving is patchy, or the cut didn’t go all the way through.

Sound familiar? Often, the issue isn’t with the machine itself, but with the artwork file you sent to it. Preparing your design correctly is the single most important step for achieving professional, clean results.

Think of your laser as an incredibly precise printer. It can only work according to the instructions you provide. This guide will walk you through the journey from a simple image on your screen to a perfectly engraved and cut physical object.

 

Step 1: Understand the Two Laser Actions: Raster vs. Vector

Before you even open a design program, you need to understand how the laser operates. It performs two fundamental actions:

  • Raster Engraving: This is like an inkjet printer. The laser head moves back and forth, engraving dots line by line to create an image. It’s used for shading, photos, logos, and text. The laser burns the surface.

  • Vector Cutting: This is like a pen plotter. The laser follows the exact paths (vectors) of your lines to cut through the material. It’s also used for Vector Engraving (scoring a surface along a path at high speed/low power). The laser cuts along a line.

Why does this matter? Your software needs to know which parts of your design to rasterize and which to vectorize. We do this by using different colors and line styles.

Step 2: Choose & Create Your Artwork in the Right Software

You can’t engrave a low-resolution JPEG from the internet and expect a crisp result. You need the right file type.

  • Best for Beginners & Versatility: Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW, Inkscape (Free). These are vector-based programs, meaning they create graphics using mathematical paths (lines and curves) that can be scaled infinitely without losing quality.

  • Acceptable for Raster Engraving: Adobe Photoshop, GIMP (Free). These are raster-based, meaning they use pixels. For engraving photographs, this is necessary, but your image must be high-resolution.

The Golden Rule: Start with Vector if Possible!

Even if your final goal is a raster engraving, creating your design as a vector first gives you maximum flexibility. You can easily resize it without quality loss and then convert it to a high-resolution raster image for engraving.

Step 3: Prepare Your Design File (The Crucial Steps)

This is the heart of the preparation process. Follow these steps for a seamless transfer to your laser software (such as LightBurn or RDWorks).

A. For Vector Cutting & Engraving:

  1. Convert to Paths/Outlines: If you’re using text, you must convert it to outlines/paths. This ensures the laser reads the letter shapes, not the font file, preventing errors if the font isn’t installed on your laser software.

  2. Clean Up Your Lines: Remove any duplicate lines or stray points. Use your software’s “Join” or “Weld” function to connect endpoints, creating a continuous path for the laser to follow smoothly.

  3. Assign Colors and Line Styles: This is how you tell the laser what to do.

    • Cutting: Assign a unique color (e.g., pure Red #FF0000) to the lines you want to cut. Set the line style to a Hairline or 0.001 pt stroke. A “hairline” tells the software, “This is a path to follow, not an area to fill.”

    • Vector Engraving: Assign a different color (e.g., Blue #0000FF) and also set it to a Hairline.

  4. Check for Open Paths: Ensure all shapes you want to cut out are fully closed. An open path might not cut correctly.

 

B. For Raster Engraving:

  1. Use High-Contrast, High-Resolution Images: The laser engraves differences in contrast. Black areas get the most power, white areas get none. Start with a clear, high-contrast image. For resolution, 300 DPI (dots per inch) is the sweet spot for detailed engravings.

  2. Convert Photos for Better Results:

    • Grayscale: Convert your color image to grayscale.

    • Adjust Contrast/Brightness: Increase the contrast to make the blacks blacker and the whites whiter. This gives the laser a clearer instruction set.

    • Dithering (Advanced): For photographs, applying a dithering pattern (like Jarvis or Floyd-Steinberg) can often create a better-looking engraving by simulating shades of gray using a pattern of dots.

Step 4: Import into Your Laser Software and Set Parameters

Once your design is perfectly prepared, import it into your laser software (e.g., LightBurn).

  1. Material Settings are Key: The speed and power settings will make or break your project. These depend entirely on your material type and material thicknessAlways test on a scrap piece first!

    • For Raster Engraving: You’ll set a Speed (e.g., 100-500 mm/s) and a Power (e.g., 10-30% for engraving, but this varies wildly). Higher speed and lower power result in a lighter engraving.

    • For Vector Cutting: You’ll set a slower Speed (e.g., 10-30 mm/s) and higher Power (e.g., 70-100%). You’ll also set the number of Passes if you need to cut through thick material in multiple runs.

  2. Layer Management: Your software will recognize the different colors in your file and place them on separate “Layers.” You can then assign different Speed/Power settings to each color. For example, the Red layer cuts, the Blue layer vector engraves, and the Black layer raster engraves.
